all we ever wanted
was a nice afternoon
a walk in the park
sun on my face
walking a dog, beach day with the kids

then suddenly, out of the water
sprang out something
dark, oily, rotten

Jane took the kids and went to the car
I got on my knees and felt the waves of it
waves of black thick tar
going back to the car
in tears

sand in her hair, the kids, too
I break down by the side of the car, trembling
Jane doesn't notice, neither do the kids
covered in oil
